Kennedy was born on December 13, 1882 in Wiarton, Ontario, Canada (Mountain Lake) to William and Sarah Jane (Shaw) Kennedy. When Kennedy enlisted on November 9, 1917 at Toronto, Canada he was single and had been working as a carpenter.
He was 5'6.5" tall, had fair skin, blue eyes, and brown hair.

After being stationed with the Canadian Engineer Training Depot in Seaford, England he was transferred to the 6th Battalion, Canadian Engineers in France in July, 1918.
Kennedy was discharged on May 29, 1919 and returned to his family in Wiarton.

Kennedy died on June 18, 1969 at Westminster Hospital in London, Ontario and was buried at Bayview Cemetery in Wiarton.
