Returning from a patrol over the Bay of Biscay 407 RCAF Squadron’s Vickers Wellington (#MP622) aircraft was unable to land at its RAF Chivenor (Devon) base because of heavy fog; as a result, the six-man Canadian crew was requested to divert to RAF Beaulieu (Hampshire). On the following afternoon MP622 took flight from Beaulieu on its homeward journey. Due to heavy cloud conditions the Wellington collided in mid-air with 502 Squadron’s Handley Page Halifax (#JB902) aircraft; the six airmen on board the Wellington lost their lives; and six airmen who were on board the Halifax, including Sergeant BAINTON, as well as Civilian Peter JENVEY, who was on the ground, also perished.
