He was born in Swain County, son of the late David B. and Dollie Dills McKinnish, and was preceded in death by eight siblings.
He retired from Pharr Yarns in McAdenville, was a former officer with the Stanley Police Department, was a former member of the Stanley C.D. Rescue Squad, and attended New Life Baptist Church in Stanley.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years Willa Mae Willis McKinnish, a son William L. McKinnish, Sr. of Stanley, two grandchildren William L. McKinnish, Jr and wife Donna of Iron Station, Tina Staley and husband Jonathon of Annapolis, Ill., and four great-grandchildren Ashley Arnett, Stephanie Helms, Timothee and Marleigh Staley.
The funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Woodlawn Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home in Mount Holly.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service
