Born in Rutherford County on May 15, 1927, he was the son of John Jasper and Elsie Elizabeth Edwards Guffey. For many years, he was the owner of the Nationwide Insurance Agency in Troy and a veteran of the US Army.

Freeman of Marshall, NC, Patricia G. Wiggins of Concord, Paula G. Quate of Wilmington, and Judith G. Harden of Troy; sister, Mildred G. Morrow of Forest City, NC; 16 Grandchildren; 15 Great-grandchildren; 1 Great-great-grandchild.
