Pittsfield, Mass., July 13 (Special)--Mrs. Elizabeth Caroline Shattuck, of New York City, died suddenly this morning at Brookhurst, her country place, in Lenox, at the age of seventy-one. Mrs. Shattuck was seriously ill in New York City early in the spring, but gained sufficiently to be taken to Lenox. She arrived there in a special train from New York City one Sunday morning in June, and was carried to her summer residence in an ambulance. For a short time the change in climate proved beneficial, but for the last week she had been growing weaker.

She was the widow of William B. Shattuck, of New York City and New Orleans, who was one of the leading cotton brokers and bankers in the south. Mr. Shattuck died about two years ago, in New York City. The Brookhurst property, owned by Mr. Shattuck's estate, is one of the most beautiful places in Lenox. Since the death of Mr. Shattuck his widow had spent the greater part of each year there, with her daughter, Mrs. Francis B. Hoffman. In former years Mrs. Shattuck entertained extensively.

Besides Mrs. Hoffman, Mrs. Shattuck is survived by a son, Alfred R. Shattuck, of New York City, who married Miss Strong, the daughter of ex-Mayor William L. Strong, of New York City. Mr. Shattuck and family are occupying a cottage near the residence of his mother this season. The funeral of Mrs. Shattuck will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, Lenox, Friday morning. The interment will be at Greenwood, Brooklyn.
