Henry was an American essayist born in Cornwall, Vermont. He graduated from Middlebury College in the class of 1840. Middlebury is a private liberal arts college.The college was founded in 1800 by Congregationalists marking it the first operating college or university in Vermont. It offers majors in arts, humanities, literature, foreign languages, social sciences, and natural sciences. The school is known for its graduate programs that focus on language, political science and entrepreneurship.
Henry served as a chaplain with General B. F. Butler during the Civil War and later arraigned Butler in "A Chaplain's Campaigns with General Butler (1865).
Hudson was also a noted Shakespearean scholar and literary critic.

Henry and Emily Sarah Bright were married December 15, 1852 in Northampton, Massachusetts. They had one son William who died when he was seven.
