Warrant Officer(WO) Gary Richard Mason, Vietnam Veteran, Native of Hendersonville, NC.

Warrant Officer Gary Richard Mason was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army Reserve, WO Mason served our country until September 14th, 1969 in Binh Dinh, South Vietnam. He was 23 years old and was married. It was reported that Gary died when his helicopter crashed. His body was recovered. Gary was born on February 1st, 1946 in Hendersonville, North Carolina. WO Mason is on panel 18W, line 084 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for 2 years.

Army Warrant Officer Gary Richard Mason (1946-1969) – 189th Assault Helicopter Co., 52nd Aviation Battalion, 17th Aviation Group, 1st Aviation Brigade – Gary R. Mason died Sept. 14, 1969, in a helicopter crash in Pleiku province, South Vietnam – “had mechanical catastrophic failure after dropping off general en route to Camp Holloway.” He was a helicopter pilot and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was born Feb. 1, 1946, in Henderson County, a son of Fred Crowell Mason Jr. (1925-) and Lois Mae Newman Mason (1926-1976). At the time of his death, he was married to Carol Mason and had a daughter. He and his mother’s grave sites are at Shepherd Memorial Park in Henderson County.

THE TIMES-NEWS, HENDERSONVILLE, NC, SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 20, 1969: Army Warrant Officer Gary R Mason, Son of Maj Fred C Mason(RET), and Mrs Mason of Grimsdale, was killed in action September 14. He was a helicopter pilot. Surviving in addition to the parents are the Widow, Mrs Carol Mason of Augusta, Georgia, a daughter, Dabney of the home and a sister, Cathy of the home. The body will be returned to Hendersonville for services and burial.

He served with the 189th Assault Helicopter Company, "Ghostriders", 52nd Aviation Battalion, 17th Aviation Group, 1st Aviation Brigade, USARV.

He was awarded Army Aviator Wings, The Bronze Star Medal, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and The Air Medal with Three Oak Leaf Clusters.
