He was born Feb. 1, 1946, in Henderson County, a son of Fred Crowell Mason Jr. (1925-) and Lois Mae Newman Mason (1926-1976). At the time of his death, he was married to Carol Mason and had a daughter. He and his mother’s grave sites are at Shepherd Memorial Park in Henderson County.

He was a helicopter pilot. Surviving in addition to the parents are the Widow, Mrs Carol Mason of Augusta, Georgia, a daughter, Dabney of the home and a sister, Cathy of the home. The body will be returned to Hendersonville for services and burial.
He served with the 189th Assault Helicopter Company, "Ghostriders", 52nd Aviation Battalion, 17th Aviation Group, 1st Aviation Brigade, USARV.
He was awarded Army Aviator Wings, The Bronze Star Medal, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and The Air Medal with Three Oak Leaf Clusters.
