Man Dies Trying To Save Niece

Family sees father perish on outing near Newton Falls. A 28-year old father of three children. While his wife and three children, his mother and brother and other relatives stood by helpless to aid him, Haynie, the Braceville victim, sank beneath the waters of the Mahoning River near the entrance of Cale Creek in Newton Township between Newton Falls and Lake Milton, about 3:45 p.m. Sunday after attempting to rescue a niece, Elizabeth Haynie, 13, who slipped from an inner tube on which she was playing. Haynie's wife, Verna, plunged into the stream and saved Elizabeth who was struggling in the water after Haynie disappeared.

According to the report received by Newton Falls and Warren city fireman, Elizabeth and a brother, Louis, 11, both children of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Haynie, were playing in the water on inner tubes. Other members of the families, enjoying a picnic, were fishing nearby. Suddenly Elizabeth slipped from the tube into the water and her screams attracted Roland, who plunged in after her. As he neared his struggling niece he apparently was overcome with cramps and sank from sight.

Rescusltation (sic) Efforts Fail

While Mrs. Roland Haynie, clad in a bathing suit, rescued the girl, another member of the family ran screaming towards the Wellsville Road where a passing motorist was stopped.
The Newton Falls fire department, under the direction of Chief E. M. Gates, responded to the emergency call, and thru the efforts of Fireman Ray Dixon and others the body was recovered from 12 feet of water.
Artificial respiration was administered at once to no avail. The Warren crew composed of Fireman Robert Rorison and Wayne Leach was called and applied oxygen without success. Dr. D. R. Mathie, Newton Falls, who administered injections of adrenalin and caffeine, pronounced Haynie dead an hour later.
Members of the family said Roland was a good swimmer and apparently suffered cramps while attempting to rescue the girl. He was employed as a roller at the Thomas Steel Co. in Warren and was well known thruout the Braceville and Newton Falls district.
Roland Haynie was born in Braceville Aug. 11, 1910, the son of Robert and Elizabeth Haynie.
