Funeral services will be at 11 AM, Thursday, March 9, 2017 at the First Baptist Church in Byers, Texas with Rev. Ken Johanan, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Byers, Texas under the direction of Davis Funeral Home.
Allene was born to the late Louis and Alma (Schwede) Kiesling in Oklaunion, Texas on January 24, 1925. She lived in Harrold and Chillicothe before moving with her family to Byers in 1941. She graduated from Byers High School. She married Cecil Schaffner on December 1, 1943. They spent time in Walla Walla, Washington during World War II before Cecil was shipped overseas. After a near wreck on the Wichita Bridge taking grain to the elevator she decided to pursue a career in cosmetology. She owned and operated the shop for over 30 years.
She also helped with the children’s department at the First Baptist Church of Byers where she was a member for 70 years.
After retiring she and Cecil traveled to several states in the US and spent 25 years on fishing trips to south Texas. She served on the board for the Petrolia Senior Citizens, and was a member of the Byers Women’s Club, Petrolia Home Circle Club and the Clay County Jail Museum. Learning to quilt from her mother she helped the Petrolia Senior Citizens Club quilt many quilts before a fall in 2010, limiting the use of her right hand. She was honored in 1999 to serve as a duchess for the Clay County Pioneer Reunion.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Cecil Schaffner, brother and sister-in-law Floyd and Betty Kiesling and sister-in-law Waunita Schaffner.
She is survived by her daughter Janet Pilsner of Henrietta, son Darold Schaffner and wife Cynthia of Byers, granddaughter Danja Bloodworth and husband Greg of Henrietta and step-grandson Bryan Fudge and Charlene of Denton, six great-grandchildren, a sister of New York, her sister-in-law LaVerne Oxley of Madisonville, five nieces and one nephew.
