One by one they pass away, the lights of former days are going out: the old land-marks are disappearing. Mrs. Mary E. Bonds, after a short illness, died at her residence near this place on the 6th., of April 1877.she was 63 years of age, and she lived a good portion of her life a consistent member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, faithful to the calls or duty and obligations. Her home was always a pleasant home to the Minister of the Gospel. She was left a widow 25 years ago, with a family of children, for whom, by her good management, she abundantly provided, and upon whom, by her example, and instruction, she left her impress for good.
In performing at her grave the last tribute of respect, I saw evinced as clearly as I ever have, the consolation of the Christian’s hope. Through the tears which flowed freely, was reflected on the dark cloud of sorrow the cheering “bow of promise.” Her tranquil and happy death gave assurance of the privilege of meeting again. Oh!, that all the aged may thus die. We are happy that we can sing of Mother Bonds:
Yes, Mother, thy course is run,
Ending in the glorious strife;
Fought thy fight, thy work is dun,
Death is swallowed up of life!
Thou art entered into joy;
Let the unbelievers mourn;
We’ll in song our lives employ
“Till we all to God return.
