Emily Diane Payne Arrowood passed away peacefully on March 6, 2017. She was born at City Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC on March 8, 1928 to Eunice Flynt Payne and Ancus L. Payne of Rural Hall. She was always proud that her ancestors had been amongst the first European settlers to this area. She embraced the Christian faith and cherished all things Moravian. She was a 1945 graduate of Rural Hall High School where she played on the women’s state championship basketball team that year. This was the World War II generation and even though too young to serve she was proud to say that during the high school summers she boarded a bus to Winston-Salem each morning where she worked in a factory making cardboard boxes for the war effort. She graduated from Salem College with a BS in Home Economics in 1949. Her first job after college took her to Vance County where she was Home Demonstration Agent until 1953.

In 1949 she met John P. Arrowood who had just moved to Henderson. They became engaged and married in 1951. Two sons were born and she took time off to raise a family until 1961 when she became school librarian at Rural Hall School for two years. She and her good friend, Ruth Beck, co-founded Rural Hall Kindergarten where she taught many young children, all becoming good friends for life. This enterprise ended with the beginning of kindergarten programs in public schools. Following this she became a newspaper librarian at the Winston-Salem Journal and Twin City Sentinel and remained there until retirement. She was always excited to get an interesting assignment to research and would give her family the “scoop” prior to the printed story.

Diane was baptized at Bethania Moravian Church. Shortly after this, her mother and others organized Rural Hall Moravian Church where she remained a member the rest of her life. She was active there in music, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, the church board, the provincial board, and Gemeinschaft. She served on the Board of Trustees at Salem Academy and College. For several years she was Democratic precinct captain for Bethania Township Number 1. Her hobbies were reading, gardening, playing piano, attending concerts, cooking for others, and getting together with her friends. Family was a special priority and she always enjoyed getting together for holidays and reunions. Over the years her wise counsel was sought by many.

Diane was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one son, Todd P. Arrowood.

She is survived by her son, John P. Arrowood, Jr. and wife, Kyle B. Arrowood, and grandsons, B. Tai Arrowood and J. Quinn Arrowood; a brother, Alan L. Payne and his wife, Billie; and a large number of cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Her last two years were spent in New Bern, NC where she made many friends and attended Centenary United Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Friday, March 10, at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday, March 11, at Rural Hall Moravian Church with Pastor Aaron Linville officiating. Burial will follow at Bethania Moravian’s God’s Acre. Following the burial, a reception will be held in the Fellowship Hall at Bethania Moravian Church.
