US Congressman. He was born one of nine children in Rocky Point, Pender County, North Carolina, to Samuel Ashe and his wife Elizabeth Haywood Shepperd Ashe in about 1810. He was educated locally and then attended Fayetteville Academy in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and then Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, where he graduated from in 1830. He studied law, was admitted to the bar, and moved to Brownsville, Tennessee, where he commenced to practice in 1832. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected. A Member of the Whig Party, he then served Tennessee's 10th District (Twenty-Eighth Congress) in the United States House of Representatives from March 4, 1843, to March 3, 1845. After his term in the United States Congress expired he was succeeded in office by United States Representative Frederick Perry Stanton on March 4, 1845. After leaving the United States Congress he moved to Galveston County, Texas, and settled near the city of Galveston, Texas, where he resumed his practice of law until his death. He passed away in Galveston County, Texas, on December 29, 1857, at the age of about 46 or 47, and his final resting place is currently unknown to historians and he is considered lost to history. He was a cousin of the United States Representative from North Carolina Thomas Samuel Ashe (1812-1887), a brother of United States Representative from North Carolina William Sheppard Ashe (1814-1862), and a nephew of the Revolutionary War veteran, and United States Representative from Tennessee John Baptista Ashe (1748-1842). He was married to Eliza H. Ashe but her date of death is unknown and it is not known if the couple had any children.
