Michael O'Leary was an Irish politician who was first elected as a TD to the Dáil in 1965 for the Dublin North-Central constituency. In 1973 he was appointed as Minister for Labour in the first Fine Gael-Labour coalition government. He was elected as Leader of the Labour Party in 1981. From 1981-1982 he was the Tánaiste and the Minister for Energy. In 1982 he resigned as Leader of the Labour Party and joined Fine Gael. That same year he was reelected as a Fine Gael TD for the Dublin South-West constituency. He was elected as a Member of the European Parliament from 1979-1984 for the Dublin Constituency. He retired from the Dáil in 1987. Before he entered politics he had trained as a barrister and was the Education Officer with the Irish Transport and General Workers Union, Ireland's largest union. After he left politics he practiced as a barrister in Cork. He was elected to Cork City Council in 1991. In 1997 the government appointed him as a District Court judge. He retired from the judiciary on his 70th birthday in May 2006 and flew to his holiday home in France where he tragically drowned in a swimming pool accident at the holiday home a few days later.
He was buried close to Abbaye St Sever, a church he regularly attended while on holidays.
