He was born to Alford and Ola Dewveall and was the youngest of 13 children. He received a football scholarship from Southern Methodist University where he was also a member of the track team. He began his professional football career as a wide receiver and tight end playing for Winnipeg in the Canadian football league. In 1958 Willard was signed by the Chicago Bears and from 1960 to 1964 played for the Houston Oilers. Willard was the first player to move from the NFL to the AFL, thus becoming the answer to a trivial pursuit question. Willard was an exuberant, kind and compassionate person with a great sense of humor. He lived life to the fullest with endless amounts of friends all over the United States, many of whom shared his love of golf. He was an avid golfer and a long time member of Champions Golf Club and a charter member of the Plantation Golf Club in Palm Springs. Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife of 37 years, Laneille Dewveall, sons, Brian Charles Dewveall and Regan Bullock; granddaughters, Kendall Louvier, Dynee Dewveall, Chandlier Dewveall and Amber Bullock; sister, Bonnie Edwards; brothers-in-law, Slim Edwards and Sherman Holmes and numerous family members and friends.
