Khedive Man Fatally Injured at Mather

Charles Christopher suffers fractured skull when struck by wrench, companion has arm broken.

Charles Christopher, aged 31 years, of key dive, was fatally injured in an accident Monday evening, at the McCormick and Drury unloading station at Mather. He died Tuesday morning in the Waynesburg Hospital. Christopher’s skull was fractured when a wrench, being used to release the trap on a railroad car filled with sand, was sent crashing against his head by the weight of the tons of sand which had forced the trap open unexpectedly. Clarence Cole, who was working with Christopher, suffered a fracture of the right arm. As a safety precaution, the wrench was always placed on the ratchet to release the trap and then a rope is tied to the wrench. The rope is several feet in length and the workmen pull the rope, releasing the trap. Christopher and Cole were taken unawares as there was no indication, that the trap was about to give way under the weight of the sand. Apparently the slight strain on the ratchet from placing the wrench was sufficient to cause it to give way. The wrench was hurled with terrific force after it had made several revolutions. Christopher was rushed to the hospital here and during the night and operation was performed in an effort to save his life.

He was a son of Newton Christopher, of Khedive, who survives. His wife, Sylvia Ewart Christopher, with three children, Ila, Kenneth and Clarence; two brothers and one sister; William Christopher, of Rices Landing; Winfield Christopher, of McClellandtown, and Mrs. Nellie Rich, of Khedive, also survive.
