He was born at home on June 3, 1939, to Adolph and Meta (Friede) Baumbach in Baraboo, Wis. He was confirmed at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Baraboo and was a 1957 graduate of Baraboo High School. Dick served in the United States Marine Corps from 1957 to 1961.

He was united in marriage to Roxanne Riedel on July 28, 1962, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Baraboo. Together they moved to Tomah in 1965.
