August emigrated to Canada in 1866 with his wife Johanna (Dammann) and his daughter Martha and his mother Caroline 'Lena' Kavelman (nee Krumm). They settled on a farm and saved enough to buy a 100 acre farm and have two more children in the meantime. August and Johanna's son Charles' wife died in childbirth and their two little grandchildren (Delphine and Hilda) came to live with them. August developed stomach cancer and died.

Death of A. Kavelman.

The death took place in New Dundee on Saturday, Jan. 24th, of Mr. August Kavelman, in his 64th year. Mr. Kavelman has been ill for some months but for some time his friends held out hopes of his recovery. He was cheerful and uncomplaining and loved to see his old friends come in to see him. Being of a kindly and friendly disposition, he was liked by everyone who knew him, and will be much missed in this community. The funeral was held on Wednesday. January 28th.
