Son of George & Hester L (Smith) Clark.

He married Nellie Melia Sawyer on September 20, 1892 in Grass Lake. Orton and Nellie settled in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan where he practiced as a doctor (M.D.). In 1918 served in World War I as a Captain in the US Army Medical Corps.

Orton was commissioned as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps on May 31, 1917 during World War I and was assigned to active duty on July 11,1917, Medical Officer's Training Camp, Ft. Benjamin Harrison at Lawrence, Marion County, Indiana. After his training, his assignments were Camp Custer, No. 1 Field Signal Battlion 310th, Battle Creek, Calhoun County, Michigan; Camp Sherman in Jefferson County, Oregon as Division Surgeon of 83rd; 338 Infantry, 85 Division at Camp Custer's Base Hospital; and in Washington, D. C., office of the Attending Surgeon. Orton mustered out on June 17,1919 in Washington, D. C..
