James then returned to Greene County, Indiana. He married Elizabeth "Libbie" Robertson on 16 Apr 1894 at the home of her parents. [See wedding photo at right.] He again worked as a farmer, and they were the parents of 3 children.
James was ill with a lung and throat condition for the final 3 years of his life. On 07 May 1902, doctors diagnosed what appeared to be throat cancer. He died 25 days later from what was then determined to have been tuberculosis.
James was survived by his wife, Libbie; and 3 sons, Clarence, Herman and Zenos Uland.
He was buried on 02 Jun 1902.
James' wife, Libbie, married William Joseph "Joe" Helms on 23 Dec 1904. She died of tuberculosis in 1912.
