Spc Derrick Schafer attended first through eighth grade at New Market, Iowa, and graduated from Bedford High School. Following school, he served in the United States Army in 1999. For a brief period of time, he worked at Precision Pulley in Corning, Iowa, and for the past six years at Kawasaki in Maryville, most recently as line leader in the crank shaft department. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding horses and his dog, Captain. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Henry and Margaret Schafer and Bill and Betty Zapf; uncles and aunts, Robert, Herman and Ernest Schafer, Don and Vern Estes, Jim Danner, and Thelma and Walter Kissinger. He died from injuries he received in a fire at his apartment. He was a member of the Iowa National Guard.
