Charlotte Stockton married John Conness before he left for the goldfields of California, where he arrived in San Francisco in the summer of 1849. She remained behind at her parent's home in Richmond, McHenry County, Illinois and was listed there in the census taken on 27 Nov 1850, along with her brothers James, Robert ​and Edward​.


In the 1860 census Charlotte and her husband John resided in Georgetown, El Dorado County, California with their children Walter, John, Mary and David. John was listed as a miner and Charlotte was keeping house.


In August of 1866, during the US Congress' vacation, newspapers announced that Senator John Conness would soon be leaving for a three month trip to Europe. His trip included a stop in County Galway, where he was from. Charlotte died on 9 Nov 1866 at the home of her parents in Richmond, McHenry County, Illinois. It was reported that she'd been an invalid for a number of years and her death was not unexpected.
