Served during the War of 1812. He was a private in the Infantry Company commanded by Captain James Ware. He enlisted on 1 Oct 1812 and was given an honorable discharge on 1 Mar 1813. He later served from 25 Aug 1813 to 4 Mar 1814. His regimental commanders were Col. Walton Harris and Col. Samuel Groves. He was discharged at Milliageville, GA.
Husband of Sarah Daniel Penn Ware, 2/5/1805-2/6/1853. Son of Lt. James Powell Ware, 11/19/1745-12/9/1825 and Mary Veal, 10/19/1760-3/6/1844.
Shortly after their marriage they moved to the Cherokee Indian Terrioty which is now Floyd County, Georgia.
Edward built his home, Courtesy, believed to have been built ca 1822 at what is now Booze Mountain Road SE and Superior Drive SE and is also the location of the Ware Cemetery which can be seen from the home. The house was built by local Indians as Edward's slaves did not have carpentry skills.
He at one time had a total of 1200 acres in his plantation which he called Courtesy. In addition he rented other lands and his holdings at other locations amounting to over 3000 acres. In 1850 and 1860 slave holding records indicate that in Floyd County he required more than 180 hands and one overseer to farm these lands.
The house, Courtesy, is still standing and has recently been bought and is undergoing (2006-2007) restoration to original condition.
We visited Courtesy in 1999 and it was a wonderful experience overlooking the plantation and cemetery and trying to visualize the plantation as it existed at that time.
Edward was first shown in Floyd County's first census of
1840. His oldest son, James, is listed as being born in Georgia in 1823 by census records and is believed to have been born at Courtesy. All of the other children have been listed as having been born at Courtesy.
