Mr. William Denning Poling, Jr., 83, of 300 Mountain Lane, Knoxville, Maryland died Thursday, January 11th, 2007 at Manor Care Nursing Home in Potomac, Maryland.

Born September 24, 1923 in Athens, Ohio, he was the son of the late William Denning Poling, Sr. and Lola Mae Carpenter.

Mr. Poling was a retired executive vice president of the Bank of Bethesda. He was a graduate of Athens High School in Ohio and the University of Maryland. Mr. Poling served four years in the United States Navy during WWII. Mr. Poling was an avid athlete who lettered in several sports at the University of Maryland. He was a member of Delta Sigma Phi. He played under Coach Paul Bear Bryant and his proudest moment was when Coach Bryant referenced him in his retirement interview in "The Atlantic Journal" stating that his most memorable moment in his career was not at Alabama but at Maryland in 1945. "It came in a game against an undefeated Virginia team. We were down 13-12, fourth and 28 and had the last play of the game. "Red" Poling threw a 50 yard touchdown pass to Don Gleasner and we won 19-13". Mr. Poling was also the recipient of the Arch McDonald Trophy in 1946 for "Outstanding College Football Player in the District" while at the University of Maryland. In 1991, he was elected to the Athens High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

Surviving are two children, Harry Poling and wife, Denise L. of Knoxville and Deborah L. Dorsette and husband, Michael; six grandchildren, William, Tamara, Janelle, and Brittany Poling, all of Knoxville, Courtney and Monica Poulus; two sisters, Marilyn Branstitter of Westerville, Ohio and Donna Chadwell of Worthington, Ohio; many nieces and nephews. Mr. Poling will also be remembered by his long time special friends, Lucille Weldon, Dorothy and Robert Keene.

Memorial service will be held at KEENEY AND BASFORD FUNERAL HOME, 106 East Church Street, Frederick at 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 15, 2007. Interment will be at Clarks Chapel Cemetery in Athens, Ohio at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the University of Maryland College Park Foundation at UMCP Foundation in memory of William D. Poling, 2707 Comcast Center, Terrapin Trail, College Park, MD 20742.
