OBITUARIES

Anchorage Daily News (AK) - Wednesday, May 22, 1991

Alaska Bush Dentist Dr. Robert W. Carpenter "Dr. Bob" 62, of Bethel, died May 20 after a four-year battle with cancer.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Moravian Church in Bethel. Burial will be in the Old Village Cemetery in Bethel. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, Eighth Avenue and E Street.

Dr. Carpenter was born Nov. 24, 1928, in Evansville, Ind. He attended the University of Louisville, Kentucky, where he graduated in 1949. He then attended dental school, graduating in 1953. In 1951, he met and married Diane Helene Shain, a music student at the university.

He served in the U.S. Air Force 4077th Mobile Hospital Unit in Korea, receiving an honorable discharge as a captain. Dr. Carpenter and his family moved to Alaska in 1955 with the Public Health Service, serving a tour as a dentist in Ketchikan and Bethel. From 1960 to 1970, he and his family homesteaded at Stony River on the Kuskokwim River.

He conducted his public health service practice out of bush planes with portable dental equipment. Many high school students worked with him at his Bethel clinic over the years. His practice spanned the Upper and Lower Yukon and Kuskokwim River Deltas. Dr. Carpenter was Bethel's second mayor and served on the City Council in later years as well.

The Carpenters' Bethel home has been open to all for more than three decades. He received each guest with warmth, charm, wit, and his famous sourdough bread, according to his family. Visitors cherished his affectionate, easy-going nature. His caring for others was reflected in his service to the Bethel Group Home Board, Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corp., Pacifica Institute, Bethel Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 10041, and Older Alaskans Commission, on which he had been serving since 1988.

Dr. Carpenter is survived by his wife, Diane of Bethel; his daughters, Cathy Janvrin and Jeannie, both of Anchorage, Lisa Meyers and Julie, of Bethel; his son, Robert "Chipper", and his brother, Dr. Gene Carpenter of Providence, R.I.; 10 grandchildren, Chase Janvrin, Taj Janvrin, Gia Janvrin, Becky Meyers, Lindsey Meyers, Rachel Meyers, Allison Meyers, Danny Carpenter and Caitlin Carpenter, and Georgia Rodgers; and other family members including, Paula Easley, Kathryn Easley, and Laura Easley, Margaret Vollertsen, Richard Vollertsen, and Steven Vollertsen, all of Anchorage, and Don Shain of Los Angeles.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Robert W. Carpenter High School Scholarship Fund, P.O.. Box 1208, Bethel 99559.
