August (von Kniller) Kneller was a chld in Klein Arnsdorf, East Prussia, near Gross Arnsdorf (now Jarnoltowko, Poland, near Jarnoltowo, Poland). Some records state that he was born in Königsberg, which was north of Gross Arnsdorf. His father, Julius von Kniller, was a Junker, or landed nobility, who decided to come to America in 1888 due to the wars in Europe, the estate where they lived was sold, and because his eldest son Rudolph (child of his first marriage) had settled in Chicago five years earlier. August was the oldest child of his father's second marriage, to Dorothea Reisberg. His full sibling was Emilie von Kniller, who married Fred Rittmeier. His younger half-siblings, by the third wife Charlotte, were Anna and Friedrich von Kniller ("Fred Kneller"). The family used the name spelling "Kneller" in Chicago. August's first wife was Elizabeth Ende, who he married on 4 Sep 1900 in Kane County, IL. They were the parents of Elsie Kneller Goltermann, Gertrude Kneller Laspesa, and a son August who died in 1906 as an infant. Elizabeth Ende died in 1907, and August remarried to Antonie Vetter on 17 July 1909 in Chicago. August and Antonie had a son William Walter Kneller in 1910, who died in 1911. Their second son was Arthur Edward Kneller, born in 1911.
