Harold served in the US Navy during WWII. He graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University with a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Education. Harold retired from the Hammond State School after many years of service in Special Education.

Surviving is his wife, Gloria Glover Abels; and two sons, Harold III, Brian; granddaughters, Christine and Erin ; grandson, Taylor.

He is preceded in death by his brothers, Alexander Abels Jr., Charles "Bubby" Abels, Wilson Abels, Raymond Abels, Jacob Abels, Edward Abels and Ralph Abels; sisters, Lillie Abels Maurin, Helen Abels Easterly and Katherine Abels Fayard.
