Deputy Mike Altman, age 42, of Marianna, Fla., passed away in the line of duty attempting to save someone's life on Jan. 30, 2007.
He was born May 9, 1964, in Orlando, Fla., to Harold and Madeline Wood Altman. Mr. Altman was a resident of Marianna for 1½ years, moving from Freeport, Fla. He was Christian by faith. He worked as a Deputy with the Jackson County Sheriff 's Department. He received his degree in Criminal Justice at Gulf Coast Community College, where he was on the President's List with a 4.0 grade point average. He was also a licensed pilot, and he believed in helping everybody in need and he enjoyed spending time with his family. He was also a Master Mason in Marianna.
Mr. Altman is survived by his father and mother, Harold Altman and Madeline Altman of Freeport; the love of his life, his wife Dorothy Jean Altman of Marianna; one stepson, James Alfred Cordle of Mossy Head, Fla.; one step-daughter, Kimberly Viola Davis of Freeport; one brother, Kent Altman and wife Anna of Freeport; one sister, Marcia Altman Grandstaff and husband Robert of Baker, Fla.; five stepgrandchildren, nieces and nephews Crystal Sullins, Robert Daniel Grandstaff, Joseph Grandstaff, Jessica Altman, Claudia Robin Altman and Kent (KJ) Altman Jr.
A time of visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, at Damascus Pentecostal Ministries Church, 922 County Highway 83A, Freeport. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Damascus Pentecostal Ministries Church with the Rev. Richard Butch Helms officiating.
Floral arrangements are being accepted or donations to the Dorothy Altman Trust Account at Banktrust in Freeport.
Burial will follow in Black Creek Cemetery with the Jackson County Sheriff 's Department Honor Guard performing honors.
