1920 - 2017
VETERAN
Early Life: George was born January 6, 1920, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Glynn Sharp and Lucile Morris Cannon Bennion. He was the second of five children and last surviving of his siblings. He grew up straddling city life in Salt Lake City and farm life on the family homestead in Utah's West Desert. He was well-read, well-spoken and equally comfortable and skillful with a pen or a shovel in his hands.
Life's Work | Service | Interests: In 1948, George married the love of his life, Joye McRae. They were married for 69 years. Joye was the most important person in George's life for every one of those years. Together, they raised ten children. George loved his children dearly and built strong, individualized and lasting relationships with each of them. He also loved and forged a close bond with each his 24 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. George was among The Greatest Generation, having lived through the Great Depression and served in the United States Army during World War II as well as its aftermath in Hawaii, the Philippines and Japan. Following the war, George returned to Utah for his education. Although he obtained a degree in banking, George's passion was language, letters and literature. At the age of forty, George began a thirty-year career in the English Department of Brigham Young University, teaching a wide range of courses from Greek classics to technical writing, and retiring as a professor emeritus of English. George was intellectually curious, open-minded and a scholar by instinct and training. More than any other field of study, the principal subject of his scholarship and learning was Jesus Christ, whom he loved and worshiped. He was genuine, loyal, honest and generous to a fault. He shared all he had with the people around him. He was particularly fond of the study group of friends with whom he explored the best books and the most important ideas of our time. George Cannon Bennion passed from this life March 22, 2017.
