Private Ora L. Thompson, the son of Needham and Sally (Holly) Thompson, died in Virginia in the Civil War while serving with Co K, 65th New York Infantry Regiment during the Army of the Potomac's Peninsula Campaign. He was "buried at war" during the chaos that ensued as Gen McClellan's Army retreated from the Peninsula under pressure from Gen Lee's counter attack from Richmond. The last record of him is of 10 June 1862 when he is left in a General Hospital. Lee's counter-attack that drove McClellan's Army of the Potomac from Richmond and the Peninsula commenced on 25 Jun (Seven Day's Battle.)

He married Celinda Waterman 1 Feb 1849 in Erie County, Ohio and had two daughters: Emma Caroline and Ella. Celinda is receiving a Civil War widow's pension by Apr 1863.
