Roman Catholic Cardinal, Archbishop of Milan. After graduating from the University of Salzburg in Austria with a doctorate in liberal arts and philosophy, he became canon of the Cathedral chapter of Passau, Germany. In 1800 he took his vows as a priest and the following year he became an auxiliary bishop of Passau, Germany, with the title of Bishop of Derbe. In 1803 he left Passau became a parish priest in the Austrian Diocese of Linz until March 1816, when he was appointed Archbishop of Milan in the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia by Austrian Emperor Francis II; however, it wasn't until two years later when it was confirmed by Pope Pius VII. In September 1824 Pope Leo XII elevated him to the position of Cardinal Priest of San Marco. During his tenure, he set out to reform the clergy in the diocese, expelling many illiterate foreign priests and assigning vacant benefices with open competitive examinations. He barred the Jesuits, Dominicans, and Capuchins from the diocese but permitted the Barnabites and the Somaschi. He participated in the 1829, 1830, and 1846 Papal conclaves. In 1841 he founded the journal "L'amico cattolico" (the Catholic friend) to promote and update religious information. He died at the age of 77. In Italy, he was known as Carlo Gaetano (di) Gaisruck.
