Evans was born Nov. 9, 1914, in Fairview, where he grew up and received his education.

During the Depression, he hopped freight trains to find work. After the Depression he worked on ranches in eastern Montana and often spoke of his experiences catching and breaking wild horses.

He joined the Army at age 32, one of the older men to sign up. He enjoyed sharing his experience of helping to save the Lipizzan Stallions. Evans was discharged in 1946.

The couple then moved to Brady. They lived and farmed east of Conrad until 1954. In December of 1954 they bought a farm east of Fairfield. He continued to farm the land at Conrad and Fairfield until the mid-1970s. The couple moved from the farm in 1994.

Evans was a member of the VFW and served as commander. He was involved with the senior citizens group, serving on the board and delivering meals on wheels. He was named Senior Citizen of the Year and enjoyed playing cribbage at the center.

His wife died in 1996. He had lived with his daughter in Florence since May of 1997.

Survivors include a son, Dale Evans of Seattle; daughter, Betty McBride of Florence; brothers, Albert Evans of Kalispell and Harvey Evans of Littleton, Colo.; three granddaughters and four great-grandchildren.--Great Falls Tribune, Oct. 8, 2000, Pg. 2-M
