George W. Hanawalt was born at Mapleton, PA., May 8, 1839, and died at his late home, 2 1/2 miles east of Colfax, May 22, 1914, from the effects of hemorrhage of the brain.
When 16 years old he moved with his father and a brother to the vicinity of Rock Island, Ill., near where he was married to Miss Olivia Coulter in 1860.
Mr. Hanawalt enlisted in the War of the Rebellion as a member of Company I, 126th Illinois Infantry, and served three years being mustered out May 8, 1865, at the close of the war.
Married twice.
