son of James W. Bell and Sarah Jemima Goldizen Rohrbaugh Bell. He married 1st. Myrta Harman. He married 2nd. Samantha B. Howdyshell.

We do not suppose there is any right thinking mind in the county but that deplores the tragedy of last Saturday, and is willing to do all they can to bring the murderer to justice. Human beings have been killed by their fellow man before in this county, but they were usually attended by circumstances that in a way relieved the slayer. In the present case it is different. Harman Bell had many enemies, tis true. Whether it was his fault or not is is useless to discuss. The glaring fact confronts us that a man lay in wait and deliberately shot Bell. The most cowardly and dastardly act a man can commit. Bell had been in Petersburg most of the day Saturday and about two o'clock started for his home, up the North Fork. At Hopeville he turned up the Gap and after going about one half mile, his murderer, who was waiting among the rocks, fired shooting him in the head causing instant death. The horse Bell was riding continued on for about one hundred yards and it too was shot. It was about four o'clock when Bell's body was found lying along the side of the road. The alarm was quickly given and an effort was made to get blood hounds but none could be obtained. Squire Roby empaneled a corner's jury whose verdict was the deceased came to this death at the hands of parties unknown.Sheriff Kimble came over Sunday night and with Pros. Atty. I. D. Smith took charge of the case, both of whom have been very active in an effort to unearth the perpetrator of the crime. On Monday evening Sheriff Kimble arrested Olie Rohrbaugh (later proven not guilty) upon suspicion and he is held awaiting a preliminary examination. Courtesy of the Grant County Press.
