Former area resident Maurine G. (Ely) Haines, 95, of North Platte died

Sunday, May 5, 2002 at Centennial Park Retirement Village in North Platte.

Graveside services are 1 p.m. Thursday at Guide Rock Cemetery with the Rev. Jack Ballinger officiating. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel in North Platte.

Mrs. Haines was born Sept. 16, 1906, to S.E. and Elsie (May) Ely at Guide Rock. She graduated from Naponee Public School in 1925 and attended Kearney State College during the summer of 1925, and then Grand Island College from 1925-26. She taught school for five years. On May 24, 1931, she married John C. Haines. She resumed teaching in 1938 and continued for 31 years. She received her bachelor's degree in 1957 and her master's degree in 1963 from Kearney State College at Kearney. She served as principal of McDonald Elementary School in North Platte from 1964-1972, when she retired. Her husband died in 1982

She was a member of the Congregational Church at Naponee, a charter member of Chapter GO, P.E.O. in North Platte, receiving her 50 year pin in1984. She also was a life member of the Parent Teachers Association in North Platte.

Survivors are one daughter, Elsie Ballinger of Sparta, Wis.; one son, Johnnie of North Platte; one sister, Leona Boon of Hastings; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
