Graham Laidlaw died March 31, 2017 in Jesup. He was 80.

Born in Jacksonville, Florida on October 28, 1936, the eldest of two boys of Chauncey and Minda Laidlaw. He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, Florida in 1954 and earned his B.S. in Business Administration at Jacksonville University in 1974. Mr. Laidlaw taught insurance certification courses at Florida Junior College in Jacksonville and Daytona Beach Community College throughout the 1970s.

He served his country in the Air National Guard.

Mr. Laidlaw’s career in the insurance industry spanned seven decades, beginning as a file clerk at H.C. Hare Company General Agents in Jacksonville in 1952. He worked at the Florida Inspection and Rating Bureau, now ISO, in Jacksonville from 1956 to 1963. In 1963, Mr. Laidlaw joined Commercial Union Insurance Company in Jacksonville. From 1968 to 1977, he worked with Aetna Insurance Company in Jacksonville. In 1977, Mr. Laidlaw joined Hartman-Tilton Insurance Agency in Stuart, Florida, managing the agency and specializing in commercial lines production. Mr. Laidlaw remained at Hartman-Tilton through 1993 and served at various times as both president and chairman of the board. In 1993, Mr. Laidlaw joined Huffman & Associates in Rome, Georgia. He moved to Jesup in 1997 and joined Strickland Insurance Agency, later Thompson Insurance Agency. In 2008, he joined Parker Insurance & Realty in Jesup and retired in 2014 after 62 years in the industry.

He was a charter member of the Sunrise Rotary Club of Stuart, Florida and served as its president. He was president of the Martin County Agents Association in Stuart, Florida, a local organization representing insurance professionals.

Mr. Laidlaw was ordained as a deacon at First Baptist Church, Jacksonville, Florida, in the 1960s. He was a deacon of the First Baptist Church of Jensen Beach, Florida, of West Rome Baptist Church in Rome, Georgia, and of the First Baptist Church of Jesup, Georgia. He had also served as a Sunday School teacher for over 50 years.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, the former Marjorie Goff of Jesup; his brother Thomas (Sue) of Tigard, Oregon; son Philip of St Augustine, Florida (currently posted in Bogotá Colombia); son Michael (Heather) and granddaughter Rebekah of Jesup; brother-in-law Wilbur Goff (Barbara) of Jacksonville, Florida; brother- and sister-in-law Robert and Wilene Wingate of Jesup; and many dear nieces, nephews and cousins.
