Lake Mack - BILLY NOLAN, 37, and WILLIAM 'JACOB' NOLAN, 7

Billy Nolan and his son died together in their Lake Mack home. Nolan's wife, Becky, and her oldest son, 11-year-old Edwin Burch, managed to escape the family's mobile home and survived.

Nolan was a "first-class carpenter" and had the "biggest heart you could imagine," said his father, William Nolan, who lived about a half-mile away.

"It's a big loss to us," he said. "You'd have to know my son -- just a super, good-hearted man."

Jacob was a second-grader at Spring Creek Elementary School. The blond, freckle-faced boy was a "happy, good-natured kid," said Principal Bob Curry. "Quiet, kind, nice, respectful. We all knew him."

William Nolan said that when Billy, the oldest of five children, was younger, the family moved from Florida to Louisiana, Maryland and New York before coming back here. But he said Billy considered the Orlando area home. Billy married Becky about a decade ago, his father said.

Several blocks from the Nolan's destroyed home in Paisley, Bill Nolan's father , William Nolan, recounted the moments before his son's death.

Nolan said his son, Bill, Bill's wife, Rebecca and their 7-year-old son, Jacob, were in the home when the tornado roared through.

When Bill heard the storm coming, his father said, he reached over and put his wife, Rebecca, on the floor. Then he ran to Jacob's room, where he hurriedly covered up his son as the home crashed in on top of them.

Rescuers found Bill's body beneath the rubble of the home. He was curled up around his son, cradling Jacob's lifeless body in his arms.

Rebecca and her oldest son, Edwin, survived the devastation, William said, but Rebecca suffered a broken collar bone and shoulder. She could not go to the hospital to get treatment because there were so many people there, he said.

William lives down the street from where his son and grandson lived on Cooter Pond Road, but said that he was still unable to go through the remains of Bill's home.

"We're trying to get over there to the remains of their house," he said. "Everything they own is gone. So far we have not been able to get through, because they won't let us in."
