Walter E. Dockery, age 89, passed away Feb. 3, 2007, at the home of his daughter in Norton after a brief illness. His family was with him when he went home to be with the Lord.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Dockery; parents, Myrtle and Franklin Dockery; sister, Ruth Dockery; brothers, Roy Dockery, Harold Dockery, Buster Dockery and Earnest Dockery.
Mr. Dockery served in World War II and received five major Battle Stars of which he was very proud. He also received a Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, World War II Victory Ribbon and a Purple Heart. He was a staff sergeant squad leader with the 745th Infantry Division. He served in Normandy, Northern France, Ardences, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by daughter and husband, Deborah and Larry Laney Sr., Norton; three grandchildren, Larry Laney Jr., Rebecca Marie Laney of Norton and Walter Ray "Tonk" Laney and wife Rebecca, Big Stone Gap, Va.; great-grandchildren, Ryan Dakota Laney-Kilgore, Xavier Kaine Laney, Kaitlyn Nadara Laney and Bryan Christopher Lawson.
The family will receive friends at 6 p.m. Sunday in the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home Chapel, with a funeral service at 7:30 p.m. with Rev. Larry Hammonds officiating. Singers will be Ronnie and Mary Kiser, Larry Hammonds and Cleamon Ison. Friends and family will meet at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, where they will go in procession to Laurel Grove Cemetery in Norton
