Daughter of George Stuckey and Edith Beedall, and a niece of George Stuckey the founder of Stuckey's Bank.

Edith Stuckey was a tragic figure - she had three sons by her first husband, Joseph Estlin. Joseph died in 1811 just after birth of the youngest. Her eldest son was mentally handicapped and lived for over 60 years. Her son Prior Estlin died in 1821 aged 11, her son Stuckey Estlin died in 1829 aged 20 after being thrown from a moving carriage. Her first son by Walter Bagehot died in 1827 aged 3. The second son of Edith and Thomas Bagehot, Walter Bagehot, became a well-known economist and author. According to an article in the Somerset and Devon FHS journal, Edith suffered from depression.
Edith is mentioned in the book "Walter Bagehot" by William Irving, 1939, and also in "Murder on the Bluff: The Carew Poisoning" by Molly Whittington-Egan, pub. Neil Wilson, Glasgow 1996. ISBN 1-897784-52-X.
