Union Civil War Veteran Soldier. During the war, he answered President Lincoln's call for volunteers and enlisted to serve in the Union Army. Seward was mustered into the 22nd Indiana Heavy Artillery and served on the staff as a Musician in the regimental band. He mustered out at the rank of Sergeant. Seward died in 1888 when he was 44 years old. Some records indicate that he also served in the 22nd Indiana Infantry.
