Published in the Oklahoma Today magazine, Winter 1996 issue:
Neighbors of Calvin and Peola Battle never knew how many people actually lived at the Battle residence, since the couple was rarely home without a child or a grandchild dropping by. "We would come and go like it was our house," said LaDonna Madkins, the Battles' youngest daughter.
Most weekends Peola and her four daughters hit the malls on Saturday and the pews on Sunday. Sunday evenings, Peola would cook a roast and bake one of the grandkids' favorite desserts, cherry cheesecake. With their dad riveted on an OU football game, the sisters would settle in their mom's room for girl talk.
Calvin could be found playing back-seat quarterback for OU. Recalled LaDonna, "He'd say (to the TV), 'You're not supposed to make that play' or 'Do the wishbone, do the wishbone.'" Before his stroke in 1993, he attended every OU home game and watched the remainder on TV; afterwards, he stopped going to the games, but he wasn't any less a fan. "Those were his boys. Barry (Switzer) was part of God himself," LaDonna said. "No matter how bad OU played, it was never the team's fault."
Besides an annual trek to Las Vegas, the Battles spent their time at home, where Peola tended a flower garden and sewed (she made all the bridesmaid and flower girl dresses for daughter Doris's wedding). "She sewed until the sun came up and down and came up again," said LaDonna.
Peola attended Bible study every Wednesday night at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, where she was a member. Alvin was a member of the Church of the Living God, Temple No. 234. "My mama always said it didn't matter where we went to church, just as long as we went," said Gwen. Peola was also active in the American Business Women's Association, Mary Kay Cosmetics (a 7-year consultant), the Eastern Star, and the American Federation of Women's Clubs. Calvin was a third-degree Mason with Luther Lodge No. 13.
