A coroner's jury returned an open verdict today in the highway death Saturday morning of Rufus Averhart, 49, of 1215 Merrill St., placing no responsibility for the accident.
Averhart died at the Corona Hospital, a few minutes after the accident occurred , at 2 a.m. Saturday morning. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Grimes Funeral Home by the Rev. Leonard Hicks, pastor of the Assembly of God, Home Gardens. Interment will follow at Sunnyslope Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. tomorrow.
The inquest, conducted at the funeral home this morning by Deputy Coroner Jim Bird brought forth conflicting testimony on the direction the cars were traveling, but nothing which apparently altered the (continued on Page 10) circumstances of the fatal collision....

Rufus A. Averhart, 49, of 1215 Merrill St., died early Saturday morning at the Corona Hospital minutes after he was involved in a traffic collision,in which four other persons were injured. He was the father of eight children....
Mr. Averhart was born July 19, 1910 in Huntsville, Ala. He has lived in Corona three years and at the time of his death he was employed as a sprayer in the citrus industry here.
SURVIVORS
Surviving him are four sons, Jerry, 18, who is in the Marine Corps., Vanis Ray, Larry and Billy; four daughters, Mrs. Doris Ann Sanders of Indiana, Wanda Lee, Patricia and Shirley; two sisters, Mrs. Aretta Jones of 1048 West Grand Blvd., and Mrs. Vashti Carter of Bay, Ark.; and a brother, James of Naylor Mo. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the Grimes Funeral Home.
