Gary was the son of Robert Long and Dorothy (Bowers) Long.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law and infant brother.

Gary attended Lincoln Northeast High school, and was drafted in the US Army and reported to Fort Sill, Oklahoma for basic training and was a proud member of the 1st Battalion, 40th Field Artillery. He served nearly 2 years in Vietnam on the front lines. After his honorable discharge he returned to Lincoln where he lived for the rest of his life.

Gary had a love for cars, he enjoyed racing at Midwest Speedway during the late 60's early 70's. His car was #56. Besides his love for cars, he loved adventure - camping, fishing, mushroom hunting, flea markets, etc. He was a man of many talents. Gary loved rebuilding his Willy's Jeep Pickup - "Murphy" as he called it.

He is survived by his sister Carol, daughters Sara, Jamie, Monica, his life partner Madeline and her daughters Melissa and Amanda. Along with many grandchildren, and his beloved dog, Diesel.
