Born on Dec. 1, 1936 in Athol, he was a son of Douglas S. and Orisza (Stone) Batchelor.
He was married to Marion (Race) in 1973 and had enjoyed 31 years together at the time of her death on Aug. 8, 2004.
A grinder at the L.S. Starrett Company in Athol for a number of years, he retired in 1999. He previously had worked for the highway department for the Town of Phillipston and was also a self-employed logger.
Dick enjoyed fly fishing, camping, Ham radio, and playing in numerous cribbage tournaments.
He had been a member of the Yankee Doodle Sam's Club camping group as well as the Catamount Sportsmen's Club in Colrain.
Survivors include his 15 children, Douglas, Roseanna, Susan, Anthony, Liza, Ernest, Arnold, Brian, Myron, Fred, Deborah, Matthew, Max, Jackoline, and Billy; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; two brothers, Gordon and Clifford; three sisters, Linda, Lauren, and Lois; and his longtime friend, Lorne Johnstone.
A Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 31 at 6 p.m. at Witty's Funeral Home, 158 South Main St., Orange. Private interment will be held in Lower Cemetery in Phillipston in the spring.
There will be a calling hour Wednesday from 5 to 6 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Gardner VNA, 34 Pearly Lane, Gardner, MA 01440.

ORANGE -- Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007 in Witty's Funeral Home of Orange, for Richard D. "Dick" Batchelor, 70, formerly of Wheeler Avenue, who died on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2007 at his daughter's home, following an illness. Rev. Adria Pearson of the Mission Covenant Church in Orange officiated. Interment will be held in the spring in Lower Cemetery, Phillipston. A reception was held at his daughter Roseanna's home following the service.
