John Cameron, a member of one of the pioneer families of Santee, passed away at his home in Lakeside, January 18, 2015.

He was born at home in Santee, California on May 29, 1920 where he lived most of his life until moving to Lakeside in 2003. He attended Grossmont High School and was in the Navy during World War II.

When he returned home after the war, John joined his brother William Cameron and formed Cameron Brothers Construction Company. They were members of AGC, EGCA and BIA.

John and Shirley were married for over sixty years, they loved hunting, fishing, camping and were able to do a little traveling. In later years, they divided their time between Santee and the Borrego Springs housing development and Resort.

John became a member of the Lakeside Historical Society as well as the Santee Historical Society and enjoyed conversations about "the way it used to be".

He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley and his parents Emily and William Cameron as well as brothers Harry Cameron, William Cameron and James Cameron.

Survivors include daughter Sharlene J. Cameron of El Cajon, sons John A Cameron II (Jack) of Lakeside and Terry W Cameron of El Cajon, grandchildren John A Cameron III, Stacy Conery, Terri Jo Bailey, Heather Squibb, Tracey Coker, Austin Cameron, Chad Cameron and 16 great-grandchildren all of whom will miss his smile and the great pride he took in their lives.

Services will be held at Paris-Frederick Mortuary, 678 South Mollison, at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 27. Officiating at the services will be his nephew Joe Sturz of Greenville, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in his name to the Santee Historical Society, PO Box 71036, Santee, CA 92071.

ohn and his brother William started the Santee-based Cameron Brothers Construction in 1946. The company began as a grading and underground construction firm and later expanded to include building construction.

Cameron Brothers Construction helped lay the groundwork for several major projects in San Diego, including the grading for Qualcomm Stadium, Torrey Pines Golf Course, La Costa Golf Resort and the San Luis Rey Downs Country Club.

"John was also very proud of the YMCA in Santee, which he helped build," said Jim Moxham, CEO of Cameron Brothers Construction.

John and William went on to build homes and, for the past 15 years, Cameron Brothers Construction has operated as a property development and management company.
John's father came to the United States from Scotland in the early 1900s, seeking work as a stone mason. He settled in Santee to work in the blue granite stone quarry, and carved out a life for future generations of the Cameron family.

The corporate headquarters for Cameron Brothers Construction and TC Construction, a company founded by John's son, Terry, in 1977, were built on the same land that now has been home to the Cameron family for more than 100 years.

"My grandfather was tough as nails," Austin Cameron said. "He was a hard worker and a leader."

Cameron Brothers Construction will continue to be owned and run by the Cameron family, Austin said.

When John was not working in the construction industry, he enjoyed hunting and fishing.
