He was the son of Veit Bach.

He married Anna Schmied around 1599, the daughter of a local innkeeper.

He became known as "The Jolly Beer Fiddler," because he played his fiddle out in the streets and in local pubs, often for a mug of beer.

He was known to be a very outgoing and jovial man, always laughing. He loved to entertain people with his music and his jokes.

He and his wife had at least twelve children. Some of his children were given the same name, apparently because he thought it was funny.

His children were: Hans Jr. (born about 1600); Heinrich (born about 1602); Johann (born Nov 26, 1604); Hans; Christoph (born April 19, 1613); Heinrich (born Sept. 16, 1615); Georg (born 1617); Hans; Sebastian (born about 1622 but died in 1631), and at least three daughters whose names are not known.

Three of his sons became very talented musicians: Johann; Christoph; and Heinrich.

**His son Christoph was the father of Johann Ambrosius Bach, who was the father of Johann Sebastian Bach.
