George Merkel was born in Wisconsin, a son of William John Merkel and Fanny Davis Brown. He had siblings Louis Bellaire 1913–2009 and Jean 1918–1984.

His family lived in Milwaukee/Shorewood, Wisconsin where his father was vice president at a lumber company.

He graduate from Michigan State college where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity.

George married Clare Ellen Doyle in 1936 in Lansing, Michigan. They had children Mary Annette ~1938-? and Patricia Clare.

When they married he lived in Buffalo, New York where George worked for General Motors. They were next in Charlotte, N.C. and Revelstoke, British Columbia, where George went into the lumber business.

The family lived in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin in 1940 where George was a bond salesman.

At some point they moved to Sun City, Arizona and later San Diego.

His survivors could not be determined.
