Mr. Elliott M. Chaplin died at his home in Sand Spring, last Sunday, the 18 inst., aged 71 years 9 months and 10 days. For several years Mr. Chaplin had been severely afflicted with rheumatism, but he obtained partial relief, and became able to journey away from home as occasion demanded. His infirmaties did not lessen his good nature, nor did they bring from his lips words of complaint and fretful impatience. We recall a visit to this office during the winter when his cheerful conversation was like the coming of the sunshine. Mr. Chaplin had resided in the edge of Delaware county for nearly fifty years, and has won the esteem and affection of two generations of neighbors.
Mr. Chaplin was born at Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire, June 8, 1834. This was the birth place of the Whittemore families who were so prominently identified with the early history of Bowen's Prairie. He attended the public schools of Fitzwilliam, and spent one year of study at an academy in Ludlow, Vermont When yet a minor he engaged in the mercantile business, but went to Adrian, Michigan, in 1854. After three years of business he came to the neighborhood of Sand Spring, and purchased land.
Mr. Chaplin was married November 8, 1860, to Jennie E. Larzelere of Dowagiac, Michigan, who survives him. They were the parents of eight children, all of whom are living.--- Monticello Express
