NEW BEDFORD -- Knut H. Les Benes, 91, of New Bedford died Thursday February 8, 2007 at Sacred Heart Home after a brief illness.

He was the husband of the late Kathleen M. (Mooney) Benes.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of the late Charles L. and Amanda Benes, he lived in New Bedford for most of her life.

He was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish.

Mr. Benes was formerly employed as a heavy equipment operator for the City of New Bedford at the Municipal Airport until his retirement.

He was a member of the Whaling City Golf Course.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Survivors include two children, Kevin J. Benes and his wife Donna of New Bedford and Kristine A. Vaz and her husband Daniel of Townsend; four granddaughters, Tara Dillberg, Nicole Vaz, Pamela Benes, and Erica Benes; and several nieces and nephews.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 9 AM in Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.

Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be Friday 4-8 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
