Michael Hugh Sweeney, 61, of Clayton, NC, (formerly of Cary, NC and Surfside Beach, SC) passed away Friday, February 17, 2017, at the Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro, NC, with his family by his side. He had fought a long courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease.

Mike was born in New Rochelle, NY, April 18, 1955, to Joseph Woods Sweeney, Jr. and Rita McCarren Sweeney. He was preceded in death by his father.

Growing up in Briarcliff, NY and Yorktown Heights, NY, he was a 1973 graduate of Yorktown Heights High School. Mike served in the US Air Force from 1973 to 1975 and the Air Force Reserves from 1975 to 1979. He earned a BS in Business Administration from NC Wesleyan College in 1995.

Mike married Margaret (Peggy) Sweeney in Addison, NY, April 12, 1980.

Mike was a proud employee of IBM for over 39 years. He started as a customer engineer, worked in East Fishkill, Yorktown Heights, Endicott, Poughkeepsie and ended his career as a services manager for the Southeast Region in Raleigh, NC.

For many years Mike volunteered his time as an Assistant Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop 222 in Raleigh, NC. He was an avid carpenter, woodworker, craftsman and runner. Mike completed numerous marathons on the East Coast prior to his being diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 2003.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years; two sons: James Sweeney of New York, NY and Scott (Carolyn) Sweeney of Raleigh, NC; mother, Rita Sweeney of Belle Isle, FL; four brothers: Joseph (Phyllis) Sweeney of Monterey, CA, Patrick Sweeney of Duxbury, MA, Sean Sweeney of Wayland, MA, Brian (Kathryn) Sweeney of Orlando, FL; brother -in-law, Pat (Bonnie) Halferty of Keuka Park, NY; and several nieces and nephews.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Catherine's Church, Addison, NY on April 29, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Carpenter-Flint Funeral Home, 10 Wall St. Addison, NY.

The family will provide flowers and ask that memorial donations in Mike's name be made to: St. Catherine's Building Fund, St. Catherine's Church, 51 Maple St., Addison, NY 14801 or to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital , 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
