Mary Ellen Read Gilgen (Meg) passed away April 24, 2017 at the age of 96. She was born in Springfield, MA, on October 30, 1920, daughter of Clinton Fielding Read and Elsie Beatrice Shriner. She grew up in Pittsfield, MA and after high school moved with her family to Los Angeles, CA.

She joined the WAVES (Navy women's auxiliary) in Fall of 1942 and shortly thereafter met her future husband, Chester Monson (Chet) Gilgen. A few months later she joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and on August 5, 1943 they were married in the Salt Lake Temple. She was discharged from the Navy while her husband continued to serve as a radar technician over North Africa.

She was the mother of five children: Read (Sue) Gilgen, Deborah (Mark) Howard, David (deceased as an infant), Rebecca (Becky) Jones, and Miriam (Dan) Steurer. With her husband and family she was a homemaker in Los Angeles, Logan, Cedar City, St George, Las Vegas, and San Bernardino before settling for many years in Alhambra, CA. After their retirement they lived in Orem, and since 1994 in St George.

Her husband preceded her in death in 2004. She is survived by her children, by 17 grandchildren, 63 great grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren.

She has always been a faithful member of the LDS Church, and often divides her life into "that other life" (prior to joining the Church) and her life with Chet. She served in many callings, most often in the Relief Society. She and Chet also served numerous missions together, including Nauvoo, Temple Square, Missionary Training Center, Member Locator, and temple missions. Until recently she continued to do genealogical indexing for the Church.

Meg has lived a long and fruitful life. Her smile, sense of humor, and testimony will be remembered by all those who were fortunate enough to know her.

The family would like to thank all those who assisted her the last few years, especially the staff at the Beehive Cottages and Homes, and the doctors and staff from Applegate Hospice.

A graveside service will be held May 1, 2017, in Logan, UT where she will be interred next to her husband and infant son. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
